Description The issue arises from improper validation of record information during the parsing of Excel spreadsheets, allowing remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service due to memory corruption via a crafted spreadsheet. This can enable an attacker to take complete control of an affected system, potentially leading to the installation of programs, viewing, changing, or deleting data, or creating new accounts with full user rights.

Recommendations For Microsoft Excel versions 2002 SP3, 2003 SP3, and 2007 SP2, update to a version that properly validates record information during parsing of Excel spreadsheets. For Office 2004 and 2008 for Mac, update to a version that properly handles specially crafted Excel files. For Open XML File Format Converter for Mac, update to a version that correctly validates record information. For Excel Viewer version SP2, update to a version that properly parses Excel spreadsheets. For Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats version SP2, update to a version that correctly handles Excel file parsing.
