The article examines the Egghunter technique used in exploit development under constrained buffer size conditions. The core idea is to use a compact shellcode that searches the process address space for a specific marker an "egg" which indicates the location of the main payload. This approach allows attackers to bypass limitations where a full shellcode cannot fit into the vulnerable buffer or resides in an unpredictable memory location.
The Egghunter sequentially scans the process memory, safely handling inaccessible pages and comparing data against the predefined marker, then transfers execution to the discovered payload. This technique is commonly used in buffer overflow exploitation and in environments with protections like ASLR, enabling reliable arbitrary code execution. As a result, a successful exploit can lead to remote code execution (RCE) despite environmental constraints and unstable shellcode placement in memory.
