Citrix adds UniconOS dual-boot for Windows endpoint recovery

On August 25, Citrix introduced a dual-boot capability for UniconOS that allows users to remain productive even when Windows on their device becomes unavailable due to ransomware, failed updates, operating system corruption, or misconfigurations. The feature is available in Citrix UniconOS Release 7 2607.

UniconOS is Citrix’s purpose-built operating system for enterprise endpoints, designed to provide secure access to virtual applications, desktops, and other corporate resources. It can serve as a standalone, centrally managed environment instead of relying on a full local Windows installation.

On compatible devices, UniconOS is installed alongside Windows on a separate partition of the same physical drive. UniconOS operates independently of the Windows file system and uses Secure Boot. If the primary operating system becomes unavailable, the user can simply restart the device, select UniconOS from the boot menu, and sign in.

From there, users can access the applications they need through Citrix DaaS, as well as corporate resources through Citrix SecurAccess with Chrome Enterprise. Meanwhile, security teams can continue investigating the affected Windows environment while users continue working.

Administration is handled through Citrix UniconOS Management. Devices are automatically enrolled, while administrators can centrally configure the default operating system, boot delay, and fallback policy, as well as monitor device health.

With this approach, Citrix positions an alternative operating system on the endpoint as part of an organization’s cyber resilience strategy. This can be particularly useful during large-scale incidents, when restoring hundreds or thousands of workstations simultaneously using traditional recovery methods can be challenging.
