Description The issue arises from improper validation of record information during the parsing of Excel spreadsheets, allowing remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service due to memory corruption via a crafted spreadsheet. A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that Microsoft Excel handles specially crafted Excel files, potentially allowing an attacker to take complete control of an affected system, install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights.

Recommendations For Microsoft Excel, update to a version that includes the fix for this issue. For Office 2004, 2008, and 2011 for Mac, apply the recommended patch or update. For Open XML File Format Converter for Mac, consider disabling the conversion of Excel files until a patch is available.
