Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions Linux kernel (affected versions not specified)
Description A vulnerability in the Linux kernel has been resolved, related to the cxl/region component. The issue occurs when an intermediate port's decoders are exhausted by existing regions, and an attempt is made to create a new region with the port in its hierarchical path. This leads to a failure in finding a port decoder, resulting in a cleanup path. During the cleanup of the region reference, a sanity check attempts to dereference the decoder, which may not exist, causing a NULL pointer dereference error. The estimated number of potentially affected devices worldwide is not available. There is no information about real-world incidents where this issue was exploited.
Recommendations To resolve the issue, refactor the decoder allocation and de-allocation into helper routines. In the 'free' routine, check that the decoder, @cxld, is valid before attempting any operations on it. As a temporary workaround, consider implementing sanity checks for the decoder before attempting to access or manipulate it. However, the most effective solution is to apply the fix provided, which involves refactoring the decoder allocation and de-allocation routines. At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
