Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Linux kernel versions prior to 6.0.0-rc6+ #33
Description
The Linux kernel contains a flaw in the ftrace subsystem related to recursive locking of the
direct mutex within the ftrace modify direct caller function. This can lead to a deadlock situation when register ftrace function is called while the direct mutex is already held. The issue was identified through testing with the ftrace-direct-modify.ko sample and reported by Naveen. The ftrace modify direct caller function and register ftrace function are involved in the locking process.Recommendations
Versions prior to 6.0.0-rc6+ #33 should be updated to a newer version that includes the fix. The fix involves using
register ftrace function nolock in ftrace modify direct caller.Exploit
