Public exploit code has been released for four Linux kernel vulnerabilities, each allowing a local user to escalate privileges to root. While kernel maintainers have patched all four over the past few weeks, the public availability of working exploits means any unpatched system is now at immediate risk.
Technical Breakdown: - CVE-2026-1234 (Race condition in net/sched): Exploits a use-after-free in the packet scheduler to gain arbitrary write. - CVE-2026-5678 (Heap overflow in io uring): Leverages a missing bounds check in the async I/O subsystem. - CVE-2026-9012 (Privilege escalation in eBPF verifier): Bypasses the verifier's safety checks to execute arbitrary kernel code. - CVE-2026-3456 (Dangling pointer in VFS): Triggers a double-free in the virtual filesystem layer. - Affected: Kernels prior to 6.12.5, 6.11.12, and 6.6.68 (LTS). - IOCs: No specific network IOCs; exploitation is local. Look for unusual unshare() or userfaultfd() syscall patterns, and unexpected kernel module loads.
Defense: Patch immediately to the latest stable kernel. If patching is delayed, restrict local user accounts, disable unprivileged user namespaces ( kernel.unprivileged userns clone=0 ), and monitor for abnormal syscall sequences from non-root users.
