Description Multiple issues were identified in the Linux kernel related to memory management and userfaultfd. One critical issue involves a protection-update race in the make uffd wp huge pte() function. This occurs because the function calls huge ptep modify prot commit() without first calling huge ptep modify prot start(), which is necessary to atomically clear the entry. Consequently, hardware Dirty or Accessed updates in the live Page Table Entry (PTE) can be overwritten by a stale snapshot, leading to data loss of those updates.
Other identified issues include:
  • pagemap scan hugetlb entry() fails to write-protect gigantic hugetlb pages due to incorrect range comparison against HPAGE SIZE instead of the hstate page size.
  • A self-deadlock occurs during PAGEMAP SCAN with PM SCAN WP MATCHING over unpopulated hugetlb ranges when pagemap scan pte hole() calls uffd wp range() while holding a read lock that is later requested as a write lock by hugetlb change protection().
  • The change non present huge pmd() function may silently lose the uffd-wp marker during device-private PMD permission downgrades.
  • The must wait() function applies pte write() to a locklessly read PTE without verifying pte present(), potentially causing threads to remain parked on stale faults.
  • An out-of-bounds write occurs on 32-bit systems when VMA UFFD FLAGS unconditionally feeds VMA UFFD MINOR BIT to mk vma flags().
Recommendations At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
