Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Linux kernel (affected versions not specified)
Description
A race condition exists in the ext4 file system when handling Direct I/O (DIO) writes to holes on no-extent inodes. When a DIO write fails and falls back to buffered I/O, an unprotected window occurs between the execution of
ext4 buffered write iter() and the subsequent flush and invalidate operations. During this window, concurrent asynchronous DIO completions from other threads may execute kiocb invalidate post direct write(). If pages are re-dirtied during this time, the system triggers a page cache invalidation failure, resulting in an -EIO error during fsync. This issue can be triggered via normal I/O paths, such as when multiple kworkers issue concurrent I/O to a backing file or when non-overlapping DIO writes share a large folio because the block size is smaller than the folio size.Recommendations
At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
